MORE THAN A YEAR LATER EDIT:
GAAAAAH THE COLORS ARE TOO BRIGHT

GAAAAAAHHHHHHH IT BURNS MY EYESSSSS
</edit>

So this is Applejack unicycling. The trick she's doing is called a "superman." It's fairly easy to do but potentially impressive-looking.

that, or it might be front-hoof wheelwalk.
whatever

So how many layers are you using for your highlighting.. like her hair or her body? Or are you just using the smudge tool a lot?

I don't actually remember what I did on this one. The colors in it(especially the background) are a bit oversaturated for my tastes, anyway. Things with no contrast of saturation kinda hurt my eyes.

I think I used GIMP. If I was putting the highlights on a different layer I would have had one layer for the highlights on the hair and another layer for the highlights on the body, or maybe just had the highlights for the body on a different layer set to luminosity or division or something(so it would be easier to go across the cutie mark) and the highlights in the hair on the same layer as the initial flat colors. If I used smudge it would have been with a super-high-resolution circular fuzzy brush going along the contours.

Nowadays when I use layers they directly correspond to objects in the foreground/background and I usually end up merging them for the final render.

This was done digitally. I probably could do something similar in pastel (it wouldn't be quite as clean, but some people would prefer the texture and traditional "feel" it would have) but I'd probably have to buy better pastels than the ones I currently own, and I'd have to have the right shades of orange.

For reference, here is the most recent thing I've done in pastel [link]
...which is just a simple landscape that took me 1/10th as long to do as this picture of Applejack did. Chalk pastels on sketchbook paper.

I really, really want to get a good set of oil pastels, though. It's a great medium.
